About the Artwork

The virginal Lady (not otherwise named in the poem) sits in peril in a dark wood, lower right. Above her is the evil enchanter Comus with his fellow revellers, their brutish condition symbolized by their animal heads. The Lady's attendent Spirit or guardian angel hovers in the sky upper left.
