In this image, the Madonna holds a curly haired Christ Child upon a richly brocaded cushion placed on a ledge in front of an expansive landscape. Pinturicchio painted the Child gazing serenely out toward the viewer, as if He were aware of His own holiness. He holds a globe, symbol of His dominion over the earth. Pinturicchio paints the globe as if made of transparent crystal to show off his impressive artistic talents.
